7 March – 9 April 2020
Arts from the Margins Gallery
opening 2pm – 4pm Saturday 7th March
Difficult feelings and painful memories can make us feel alienated and alone. The work in this exhibition by Katka Adams and her daughter, Sophie Adams touches on these feelings of isolation.
Sophie’s series of female figures, made from combinations of different clay bodies, speak of life with mental illness. The strangely-behaving hair of these figures represents the overwhelming experience of not having control and being lurched into emotional upheaval.
Katka’s work responds to her experience of PTSD, a challenging time spent contemplating her life. As feelings flowed through her she revisited the sadness that she had struggled to understand as a child. She came to name it ‘Pandora’s box’, the suitcase within that had sprung open, enabling her to acknowledge and process her past. In doing so a clear gentle light remained, and so emerged Travelling Light, with jasmine, marigolds and a white feather at the bottom of that suitcase symbolising healing, hope and regrowth.
